In the Third Age of Arda, the world was round and Valinor had been removed from it. Near the end of the Second Age, the Numenorians went to Middle-earth to make war upon Sauron. Sauron surrendered to them and was taken back to Numenor, where he convinced the king Ar-Pharazon to invade Valinor to win immortality from the gods. When Ar-Pharazon's navy arrived at the shores of Valinor, the Valar called upon Illuvatar to help. Illuvatar opened a rift in the sea, which Numenor and most of its people were lost in. He removed Valinor from the surface of the world and bent the seas to make the world round. Valinor was then only findable by the Elves, except in very rare cases. Although the shape of the world was different in the Third Age, its geography was not, except for the removal of Valinor and Numenor.
